Ages 6-10 · 45 minutes · free lesson plan · Matthew 7:24-27
Elementary children hear Jesus' story of the wise and foolish builders, test rock and sand foundations, and learn that hearing and doing His words builds a strong life.
Memory verse
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (Matthew 7:24, KJV)
Lesson objectives
- Retell Jesus' story of the wise man and the foolish man in order.
- Explain that being wise means hearing Jesus' words and doing them.
- Choose one way to obey Jesus this week.
The full lesson plan
Welcome: Shaky or Steady? (5 min)
Setup: Write the memory verse on the large paper and post it.
Game (3 min): Children stand in a spot with room around them. Call out "Shaky!" and they wobble in place on one foot. Call out "Steady!" and they stand strong with feet apart. Mix the calls up a few times.
Say: Which one would you want your house to be, shaky or steady?
Say: Today Jesus tells us a story about two builders and two very different houses.
Say: Let's find out which house stayed standing and why.
Transition: "Let's listen to what Jesus said."
Hear the Story (6 min)
Open the Bible to Matthew 7 and show the children where it is. Read verses 24-27 aloud from the KJV, then retell it with actions:
1. A wise man built his house on a rock. (Hands stacking.)
2. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house. (Wiggle fingers down, sway, push with hands.)
3. The house did not fall, because it was founded on a rock. (Plant feet, arms crossed.)
4. A foolish man built his house on sand. (Stack hands loosely.)
5. The same rain, floods and winds came. This house fell, and the fall was great. (Crouch down.)
Say: Jesus said the wise man hears His words and does them.
Say: Jesus said the foolish man hears His words and does not do them.
Say: Notice that the rain and wind came to both houses.
Retell once more, letting children shout "Rock!" or "Sand!" when you pause.
Transition: "Now let's think about what this means."
What Is the Rock? (8 min)
Say: Jesus was teaching a big crowd. He had just told them how to live, and then He told this story.
Say: The rock is hearing Jesus' words and doing them. Hearing alone is not enough.
Give examples and ask for a thumbs up (doing it) or thumbs down (only hearing it):
- Jesus says to be kind, and you share your toy.
- Jesus says to forgive, and you stay angry.
- Jesus says to tell the truth, and you tell the truth even when it is hard.
Say: Storms are the hard times that come to everyone, like being sad, scared, or treated unfairly.
Say: When we follow Jesus, He helps us stay strong, because He is the one we trust.
Say: Jesus is called our rock in the Bible. He never changes and He never lets go of us.
Background: Sand shifts and washes away, while rock stays put. Ask: "Which would you rather stand on in a storm?"
Transition: "Let's test it ourselves!"
Storm Test Builders (8 min)
Setup: Fill one tray with a deep layer of sand. Lay the flat board on the other tray. Place both on a table.
Time: 8 minutes.
1. Divide children into two teams. Team Sand and Team Rock each build a small house by stacking paper cups.
2. Team Sand builds on the sand tray. Team Rock builds on the board.
3. Read verse 25 aloud and gently shake each tray to be the "storm." Add a paper fan for wind, held at arm's length.
4. Compare what happened. Swap teams and try again.
5. Ask: "What would help the sand house last?" (Nothing, unless it moves to the rock!)
Say: A house stands strongest when its foundation is solid.
Say: Our lives stand strongest when we do what Jesus says.
Safety: Keep sand low and away from faces and mouths. No throwing sand. Check for sand or dust allergies. Wash hands afterward.
Transition: "Now let's make something to remember."
Two Houses Flip Card (8 min)
Setup: Cut or fold paper in half for each child. Prepare a few samples.
Time: 8 minutes.
1. Fold the paper like a card. On the front, draw a house on a big gray rock. Write "Hear + Do."
2. Open the card. On the inside left, draw a house on sand with waves and rain. Write "Hear only."
3. On the inside right, draw the same storm over the rock house, still standing. Add a heart or cross above it.
4. Write Matthew 7:24 and your name on the back. Younger children can copy "Hear + Do."
5. Practice the verse with a partner using the card.
Say: Use this card to remember to hear Jesus' words and do them.
Safety: Scissors and glue are for supervised use only. Do not eat glue or crayons.
Transition: "Let's talk about what we learned."
Talk About It (5 min)
Ask the children these questions:
1. Why did the wise man's house stay standing? (It was built on a rock.)
2. What does it mean to "do" what Jesus says? (Obey Him by being kind, honest, or forgiving.)
3. What storms can children face? (Fights with friends, being scared, someone being sick.)
4. What is one thing Jesus asks us to do that you can do this week? (Share, forgive, tell the truth, pray.)
Say: Doing what Jesus says is how we build on the rock.
Say: Jesus is always with us, even in storms.
Transition: "Let's finish by talking to God."
Closing Prayer and Verse (5 min)
Say the memory verse together three times: slowly, in a whisper, then strong and steady. Use building motions: stack hands on "built his house," and stand firm on "upon a rock."
Say: Let's thank Jesus and ask Him to help us build on Him.
Prayer points (repeat each line after you):
- Thank You, Jesus, for being our rock.
- Help us hear Your words and do them.
- Help us trust You when storms come.
- Help us be wise builders this week.
Say: Take your card home and show someone your two houses.
Say: Remember, hear and do!
Dismiss children to their parents.
Materials
- Bible (KJV)
- Two shallow trays or plastic tubs
- Play sand in a small tub
- Flat board or thick book (the rock)
- Paper cups for building houses
- Paper or cardstock, one sheet per child, plus one large sheet for the verse
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors and glue sticks
Teacher notes
- Safety: Sand, scissors, glue and crayons are used. Supervise closely, keep sand low and away from faces, and check for allergies before class.
- Stress that the passage says storms hit both houses. Following Jesus does not prevent hard times, but it gives strength in them.
- Adaptation: Use pictures of the two houses for visual learners, pair younger children with a buddy, and let children who prefer quiet watch or draw instead of shaking trays.
- Keep the focus on trusting Jesus, not on earning His love by doing good. We obey because we love and trust Him.
Send it home with parents
Today we studied Jesus' story of two builders in Matthew 7:24-27. The wise man built on a rock and his house stood in the storm, while the foolish man built on sand and his house fell. Jesus teaches that we build on a strong foundation when we hear His words and do them. Children tested rock and sand foundations and made a two-house flip card.
- Which house would you want to live in during a storm, and why?
- What is one thing Jesus asks us to do that is hard for you, and how can we help each other do it?
Build two small houses at home, one on a pillow or sand and one on a tray or flat book. Gently shake each and see which stays up. Read Matthew 7:24-27 together and say the memory verse.
Each day, pick one thing Jesus teaches (be kind, forgive, tell the truth) and do it. Tell the family at dinner how it went.
