Memory verse
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8, KJV)
Lesson objectives
- Retell in order the blessings Jesus gave in Matthew 5:3-12.
- Explain in simple words that Jesus says God blesses people who are humble, merciful, and peaceful.
- Choose one way to live out a blessing this week and say Matthew 5:8 from memory.
The full lesson plan
Welcome: Who Is Really Happy? (5 min)
Setup: Write the memory verse on a poster or board.
Say: "Good morning! Today we are going to talk about being happy."
Game (2 min): Read each situation. If it would make most people happy, stand up. If not, stay seated.
- Winning a game.
- Getting a big gift.
- Having no one to sit with at lunch.
- Losing your favorite toy.
- Being told you are the best.
Say: "Most people think happy people are winners, rich, or loud. Jesus said something very different."
Say: "One day Jesus taught His followers on a mountainside. He told them who God calls 'blessed.' Blessed means God is kind to them and cares for them."
Say: "Let's listen to Jesus' surprising words."
Listen to Jesus' Words (7 min)
Say: "Listen for the word 'blessed.' Count how many times you hear it."
Read Matthew 5:3-12 aloud from the KJV. Pause after each verse, say the plain-words meaning, and have the children do the motion.
- v3 Poor in spirit (knowing we need God): hands open, palms up.
- v4 Mourn (sad): rub eyes. God comforts.
- v5 Meek (gentle): gentle pat on the shoulder.
- v6 Hunger and thirst for righteousness (wanting to do right): rub tummy.
- v7 Merciful (kind to those who do wrong): hands over heart.
- v8 Pure in heart: point to heart.
- v9 Peacemakers: make a peace sign.
- v10-12 Persecuted (treated badly for following Jesus): stand tall. Jesus says to rejoice.
Say: "Did you count? Jesus said 'blessed' many times."
Say: "Now let's see what Jesus is teaching us."
God's Upside-Down Kingdom (8 min)
Say: "Jesus' list sounds upside down. The world says be tough, be first, and get even. Jesus says God blesses people who are humble, gentle, and kind."
Teach three big ideas with a simple example each:
1. Needing God. "Poor in spirit" means knowing we cannot do life alone. Jesus promises the kingdom of heaven to people who trust Him.
2. Showing kindness. The merciful are kind even when someone has been unfair. Peacemakers help friends stop fighting. Jesus says peacemakers are called children of God.
3. A clean heart. Pure in heart means wanting to love God and be honest inside, not only looking good outside. Jesus says they shall see God.
Say: "Jesus did not only teach this. He lived it. He said, 'I am meek and lowly in heart' (Matthew 11:29)."
Say: "Following Jesus can be hard, and some people may be unkind to us. Jesus says God has a great reward in heaven for His people."
Say: "Now let's play a game to remember these blessings."
Blessing Match-Up Game (8 min)
Setup before class: On 8 index cards write the people (poor in spirit, they that mourn, the meek, hunger and thirst after righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, persecuted for righteousness' sake). On 8 more cards write the matching promises (theirs is the kingdom of heaven, shall be comforted, shall inherit the earth, shall be filled, shall obtain mercy, shall see God, shall be called the children of God, theirs is the kingdom of heaven). Put the 16 cards in a basket.
Steps (about 8 minutes):
1. Make two teams. Spread the cards face up on the floor or table.
2. Take turns: one child from each team walks to the cards, picks one, and reads it aloud.
3. The child then finds its match. The team can help by calling out.
4. If the pair is right, check it with Matthew 5. The team keeps the pair.
5. When all the cards are matched, read the pairs together and cheer: "Blessed!"
Safety: Walk only. Pair a child who finds reading hard with a buddy.
Craft: My Blessing Card (8 min)
Setup before class: Hand out paper and crayons. No scissors or glue needed.
Steps (about 8 minutes):
1. Fold the paper in half, then in half again to make a small card with four panels.
2. On the front panel, write "Blessed!" and decorate it.
3. Inside, write or copy the memory verse: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Draw a heart next to it.
4. On the back panel, draw one way you can be merciful or a peacemaker this week.
5. Show a friend your card and say the verse together.
Say: "Take this card home and put it where you will see it."
Walk around and help children who need spelling or drawing help.
Talk About It (6 min)
Say: "Let's sit in a circle and share."
Ask these questions one at a time and give a short sample answer if the children need help.
1. Why do you think Jesus' list sounds surprising? (Because the world says tough and loud people are happy, but Jesus blesses gentle and humble people.)
2. What does a peacemaker do? (Helps people stop fighting and be friends.)
3. When is it hard to be merciful? (When someone is unfair to us. Jesus says God shows mercy to the merciful.)
4. What does it mean to be pure in heart? (To love God and be honest inside, not only look good outside.)
5. What is one way you can be a peacemaker this week? (Invite a lonely child to play, say sorry first, or help friends stop arguing.)
Say: "Thank you for sharing. Now let's finish with the verse and a prayer."
Memory Verse and Prayer (3 min)
Say the memory verse together three times: loud, quiet, then with the motion of pointing to your heart. Matthew 5:8: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God."
Say: "Let's talk to God. Repeat each line after me."
Prayer points:
- "Jesus, thank You for loving us and blessing us."
- "Help us to be gentle and kind."
- "Help us to be peacemakers at home and at school."
- "Give us pure hearts that love You. Amen."
Say: "Go and be a blessing this week!"
Materials
- Bible (KJV)
- Plain paper, one sheet per child
- Crayons or markers
- 16 index cards (8 pairs)
- Tape
- Basket or bag
- Memory verse written on a poster or board
Teacher notes
- Safety: The craft uses only paper and crayons, so no scissors, glue, or food are needed. Keep the game to walking only.
- Adaptation: Use picture cards and motions for the beatitudes for children who find reading hard, pair them with a buddy, and offer a quieter drawing option during the game.
- Explain KJV words simply: blessed, meek, mercy, righteousness, and persecuted. Do not worry if children cannot say them all.
- For mixed ages, let older children read the cards and younger ones act out the motions.
Send it home with parents
Today we studied Matthew 5:3-12, where Jesus tells who God calls blessed: the humble, the gentle, the merciful, the pure in heart, and the peacemakers. Jesus shows that God's blessing is different from what the world calls happy.
- Which of Jesus' blessings was your favorite today, and why?
- When could you be a peacemaker this week?
Read Matthew 5:3-12 together. Take turns acting out one blessing without words while others guess which one it is.
Choose one blessing to practice this week, such as being a peacemaker or showing mercy. At the end of the week, share how it went.
