The full lesson plan
Get Ready for Battle Training (5 min)
Setup: Clear a safe open space.
Welcome the children. Ask: "What do people wear to stay safe?" (helmets, seatbelts, knee pads).
Say: "Today we learn that God gives us special protection too."
Say: "Let's practice standing strong. Plant your feet, hands on hips, and say 'I can stand!'"
Play "Stand Firm": Gently lean as the leader says "Wind!", then stand tall again on "Strong!" Repeat three times. Children stay in their own space. No pushing.
Say: "Now let's hear what the Bible says about God's armor."
Hear God's Word (6 min)
Background: Paul wrote this letter to the church in Ephesus. Roman soldiers wore armor, so his readers could picture it.
Read Ephesians 6:10-18 aloud from the KJV, slowly. Pause after verses 11, 14, 16, 17 and 18 to say them in simpler words:
- v.11: Put on all of God's armor so you can stand.
- v.14: Truth is like a belt. Right living is like a breastplate.
- v.15: Your feet are ready with the good news of peace.
- v.16: Faith is a shield.
- v.17: Salvation is a helmet. God's Word is the sword.
- v.18: Pray always.
Say: "Paul says our struggle is not against people."
Say: "It is against evil powers we cannot see, and God gives us what we need."
Say: "Now let's look at each piece up close."
Six Pieces and a Prayer (8 min)
Hold up or draw each piece. Have children copy a motion.
1. Belt of truth (hands around waist): Believe and tell what is true. God's Word is true.
2. Breastplate of righteousness (pat chest): Do what is right. Jesus makes us right with God.
3. Shoes of the gospel of peace (stomp): Be ready to share the good news about Jesus.
4. Shield of faith (arms crossed in front): Trust God when worries or lies come at us like fiery darts.
5. Helmet of salvation (tap head): Jesus saves us. We belong to Him.
6. Sword of the Spirit (swing arm gently): The Word of God. Learn it and use it.
Say: "Paul ends with prayer: 'praying always.' Talking to God keeps us close to Him."
Say: "The armor is God's. We do not have to be strong alone, because Jesus won the greatest victory for us."
Armor-Up Relay (8 min)
Setup: Before class, cut or draw six paper pieces (belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet, sword) for each team. Write the name on each. Put them at the far station.
Steps:
1. Make two or three teams. Each team lines up. Each team sends one "soldier" to the front.
2. On "Go," teammates WALK one at a time to the station. Each takes one piece and brings it back.
3. The team tapes it onto the soldier's shirt (loose tape, over clothes) and calls out what it is and what it means.
4. When all six are on, the soldier says Ephesians 6:11 with the team.
5. Swap soldiers and play again.
Safety: Walking only. Anyone may be a helper instead of wearing pieces. Tape stays on clothes, never skin.
Shield of Faith Craft (8 min)
Setup: Give each child a paper plate and craft stick. Set out markers, tape and stickers.
Safety: Adults handle all scissors. No small parts for children under 3. Check for sticker allergies if using adhesive.
Steps:
1. Draw a big cross or the word FAITH in the middle of the plate.
2. Write or draw one thing you trust God for (e.g., "God is with me").
3. Decorate the edge with markers or stickers.
4. Tape the craft stick on the back as a handle.
5. Hold it up and say the memory verse together.
Say: "When a worry or lie comes, hold up your shield and remember what is true about God."
Talk About It (5 min)
Sit in a circle. Ask:
1. Whose armor is it? (God's. He gives it to us.)
2. Which piece would help most when someone tells a lie? (Belt of truth.)
3. What can you do when you feel afraid or worried? (Pray, trust God, remember His Word.)
4. Why do we need God's armor instead of just our own strength? (We cannot do it alone, and God is stronger.)
5. How does Jesus fit with the armor? (He saves us and makes us right with God.)
Say: "Great thinking. Let's close by learning our verse and praying."
Verse and Prayer (5 min)
Say the memory verse in phrases and have children echo with a motion: "Put on..." (pretend to dress), "the whole armour of God..." (hold up shield), "that ye may be able to stand..." (stand tall), "against the wiles of the devil." (arms crossed). Repeat twice, then try it faster.
Say: "Let's pray and ask God to help us stand strong."
Prayer points (children repeat each line):
- Thank You, God, for giving us Your armor.
- Help me tell the truth and do what is right.
- Help me trust You when I am afraid.
- Thank You, Jesus, for saving me.
Send children home with their shields.
Materials
- Bible (KJV)
- Paper and markers
- Tape
- Scissors (adult use)
- Paper plates (1 per child)
- Craft sticks (1 per child)
- Two small tables or chairs as relay stations
- Stickers or stars for decorating shields
Teacher notes
- Keep the focus on God's protection, not on fear. Avoid scary descriptions of evil. Stress that God is stronger.
- Safety: Adults handle scissors. Check for allergies if using stickers or adhesive. Walking only in the relay.
- Adaptation: Use picture cards for each armor piece. Pair children who need support with a buddy. Offer a helper role in the relay instead of wearing pieces.
- If time is short, shorten the relay to three pieces per team, but keep the craft and verse.
Send it home with parents
Today your child learned from Ephesians 6:10-18 that God gives believers armor: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and God's Word, plus prayer. We stand strong because God is strong, not because we are.
- Which piece of armor was your favorite, and why?
- When do you need to be brave or tell the truth?
Use the shield your child made. At dinner, each person names one worry and one thing true about God, then holds up the shield and prays together.
Each morning, "put on" one piece of armor by naming it and praying. Say Ephesians 6:11 by the end of the week.
