Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego: Sunday School Lesson for Ages 6-10
Ages 6-10 · 45 minutes · free lesson plan · Daniel 3:1-30
An interactive 45-minute lesson on Daniel 3 for ages 6-10. Children act out the story, play a 'stand strong' game, make a 'Four in the Fire' craft, and learn Daniel 3:17 (KJV) while discovering that God is with us even in hard times.
Memory verse
If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. (Daniel 3:17, KJV)
Lesson objectives
- Retell how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to worship the golden image and were kept safe in the fire.
- Understand that we worship God alone and trust Him even when He does not rescue us the way we expect.
- Choose one way to stand up for what is right this week, knowing God is with us.
The full lesson plan
Welcome and Statue Freeze (5 min)
Setup: Clear a space. Put the gold 'statue' at the front.
Say: Welcome! Today we meet three friends who made a very brave choice.
Warm-up (3 min):
1. Play music. Children move in their own spot.
2. Stop the music. Everyone freezes like a statue.
3. Repeat three times with new moves (tiptoe, giant steps, wiggle).
Say: Great freezing! A statue stays still, but it cannot see, hear or help anyone.
Ask: Have you ever had to choose what is right when others chose something else? Let two or three children answer.
Say: Now let's hear about a giant golden statue and three brave friends.
The Golden Image and the Fiery Furnace (8 min)
Read Daniel 3:1-30 from the KJV, or tell it with these actions.
Say: Listen and do the actions with me.
1. King Nebuchadnezzar made a huge gold image on the plain of Dura. (Stretch arms high.)
2. When the music played, everyone must fall down and worship it. Anyone who refused would be thrown into a burning fiery furnace. (Crouch, then stand.)
3. Some men told the king that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did not worship the image. (Shake head no.)
4. The king was full of rage but gave them another chance. They said God was able to deliver them. Even if not, they would not serve his gods or worship the image. (Hands on hips.)
5. The furnace was heated seven times hotter. The three were bound and thrown in. (Fan your face.)
6. The king saw four men loose, walking in the fire, unhurt. The fourth looked like the Son of God. (Hold up four fingers.)
7. The king called them out. Not a hair was singed and there was no smell of fire. The king praised their God. (Quiet cheer.)
Say: Now let's find out what this story teaches us.
Brave Choices, Faithful God (8 min)
Say: The three friends made their choice before the music ever played.
1. Worship God alone. Exodus 20:3-5 tells us not to bow to images. They chose God over the king's order.
2. 'But if not.' They believed God could rescue them. Then they said that even if He did not, they still would not bow.
Say: Trusting God does not mean we always get what we want; it means we stay with God no matter what.
3. God is with us in the fire. The king saw a fourth person walking with them. Many Christians see this as a picture of Jesus, who promised, 'Lo, I am with you alway' (Matthew 28:20).
Say: When life feels hot and scary, Jesus is with us too.
Ask: What is a 'hot spot' for kids today? (Example: friends pressure you to leave someone out.) Take two answers.
Say: When we stand for what is right, we are never alone.
Say: Now let's practice standing strong in a game.
Stand Strong, King Says! (7 min)
Setup: Put the gold statue at the front. Have children stand an arm's length apart in a line facing it. This is pretend, and no one is forced to do anything.
Steps (7 min):
1. You are 'the king.' Use a silly voice and play the drum or music.
2. Give silly commands: 'Hop! Spin! Clap!' Children copy you.
3. Sometimes say, 'Bow to the statue!' Children stay tall, hands on hips, and shout, 'We serve God alone!'
4. If someone bows by mistake, no one is out. Laugh and say, 'Remember, we stand!'
5. Choose a willing child to be king for round two.
Say: It felt silly, but the real friends stood strong when it was scary.
Say: Now let's make a picture to help us remember.
Four in the Fire Picture (8 min)
Setup: Give each child a sheet of white paper. Put out colored paper, crayons, glue and scissors.
Safety: Use child-safe scissors with supervision. Tearing paper is fine instead of cutting. Check for glue or sensory sensitivities.
Steps (8 min):
1. Draw four simple people standing in a row. Color them in.
2. Tear red, orange and yellow paper into flame shapes.
3. Glue the flames around the people. Keep their faces and bodies visible and unburned.
4. Draw a small star or halo over the fourth person.
5. Write 'God is with me!' at the top.
Say: Take this home and tell the story to someone.
Say: Now let's talk about what we learned.
Talk It Over (5 min)
Ask the group:
1. What did the king command, and what did the three friends do? (Everyone had to bow when the music played; the three refused and stayed true to God.)
2. What did 'but if not' mean? (Even if God did not rescue them, they would still trust Him.)
3. Who was in the fire with them? How does that help you? (One like the Son of God; God is with us when we are scared.)
4. What is one way you can stand up for God this week? (Be kind to a left-out classmate, or pray before lunch.)
Give each child a turn to share. Thank every answer.
Memory Verse and Prayer (4 min)
Say: Let's learn our verse, Daniel 3:17. Say each line and add a motion:
'If it be so,' (shrug)
'our God whom we serve' (point up)
'is able to deliver us' (arms strong)
'from the burning fiery furnace,' (wiggle fingers like flames)
'and he will deliver us' (hug yourself)
'out of thine hand, O king.' (open hands)
Repeat twice, faster each time.
Say: Let's pray. Repeat each line after me.
- Thank You, God, that You are with us always.
- Give us courage to do right.
- Help us worship You alone.
- Be with friends who are scared or facing something hard.
Say: Go and stand strong. God is with you!
Materials
- Gold paper or a foil-covered box (the 'statue')
- Drum or music player
- White paper
- Red, orange and yellow construction paper
- Crayons
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue sticks
- Tape
Teacher notes
- Safety: Craft uses scissors and glue. Supervise closely, offer tearing instead of cutting, and check for sensitivities. Keep game spacing wide with no running.
- Adaptation: Use pictures or the finished craft as visual aids. Offer a quieter role (holding the statue, keeping the beat) and pair younger or shy children with a buddy.
- Background: Babylon was a powerful empire, and the text does not say whose image the statue showed. Keep that note short.
- Keep the fourth figure gentle: 'like the Son of God' is the text's wording. Many Christians see Jesus's presence here, but do not overstate it.
Send it home with parents
Today we studied Daniel 3. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to worship the king's golden image and were thrown into a fiery furnace. God kept them safe, and the king saw a fourth person with them. We learned to worship God alone, trust Him whether or not He rescues us the way we want, and remember that He is with us.
- What would be hard about standing up when everyone else is doing something wrong?
- When have you felt that God was with you in a scary or hard time?
Use the craft picture to retell the story at dinner. Each person shares one 'fire' they or someone they know faces, and the family prays together for God's help.
Choose one brave, kind action this week, such as including someone who is left out. Say Daniel 3:17 each morning.
