The full lesson plan
Welcome: God Said! (5 min)
Setup: Stand where all the children can see you.
Say: "Good morning! Today we start at the very beginning of the Bible."
Say: "Look around the room. Who made the trees, the sky, and you?"
Take a few answers.
Teach this call and response:
Teacher: "God said..." Children: "Let there be!"
Add an action each time: arms up for light, wave hands for water, stomp for land, flap for birds.
Practice it three times, getting faster each time.
Say: "In our story, God makes everything just by speaking. Nothing else is needed."
Say: "Sit down and listen for how many times God says that something is good."
Now let's hear the story straight from the Bible.
The Story: Six Days of Creation (8 min)
Read or tell Genesis 1 in order. Pause at each day so the children can do the "God said... Let there be!" response and the action.
Say: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. It was dark and empty."
Day 1: God said, "Let there be light." He separated light from darkness and called them Day and Night.
Day 2: God made the firmament (the sky) and divided the waters. He called it Heaven.
Day 3: God gathered the waters into seas and let dry land appear. He made grass, plants and fruit trees.
Day 4: God made lights in the sky: the sun, the moon and the stars. They mark days, seasons and years.
Day 5: God filled the waters with living creatures and the sky with birds. He blessed them.
Day 6: God made the land animals. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image." He made them male and female and blessed them.
Say: "God looked at all He had made, and it was very good."
Background: Genesis 2:2-3 tells us God rested on the seventh day.
Now let's put the days in order ourselves!
Game: Creation Line-Up (7 min)
Setup: Before class, write or draw one thing from each day on 6 cards: light, sky, land and plants, sun and moon, fish and birds, animals and people. Do not number them. Tape the cards in a mixed-up row on a wall or board.
Steps:
1. Make two or three teams. Teams stand in a line, walking only, no running.
2. Call out "Day 3!" Each team's first player walks to the wall and points to the matching card.
3. If correct, the whole team does the action for that day. If not, the team helps them by remembering the story.
4. Rotate players and repeat until every day has been called, in any order.
5. Together, rearrange the cards into the correct order from Day 1 to Day 6 and read them aloud.
Say: "Great job! God did everything in order, and He did it perfectly."
Time: 7 minutes. Now let's think about what this story teaches us.
Teaching: God Is the Creator and We Are Special (7 min)
Say: "Our verse tells us who started it all. 'In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.'"
Teach the verse with motions: "In the beginning" (arms open), "God created" (hands push out), "the heaven" (point up), "and the earth" (point down). Repeat three times, then try it with the Bibles closed.
Say: "Three big things we learn from Genesis 1."
1. God is powerful. He spoke, and it happened. Nobody helped Him.
2. God is good. Again and again, He saw what He made and it was good. At the end it was very good.
3. People are special. God made us in His image. He gave people a special job to care for the animals and the earth.
Say: "That means you are not an accident. God made you on purpose and He loves you."
Ask: "What can we do to take care of God's world?" (Pick up litter, feed the pets, be kind to animals, don't waste water.)
Gently connect to Jesus: John 1:3 says all things were made through Jesus, God's Son. The One who made us also came to save us.
Now let's make something to remember the story.
Craft: Creation Wheel (8 min)
Safety: Scissors and brass fasteners have small, sharp parts. Supervise closely. Not for children under 3.
Setup: Before class, use a pencil to divide each paper plate into 6 equal sections and number them 1 to 6. Cut a paper arrow for each child, or have older children cut their own.
Steps:
1. In each section, draw something God made on that day: light, sky, plants, sun and moon, fish and birds, animals and people.
2. Write "Genesis 1:1" in the center of the plate.
3. Help each child push a brass fastener through the arrow and the center of the plate. Bend the prongs flat on the back.
4. Practice spinning the arrow and telling what God made on that day.
5. Write your name on the back and take it home.
Say: "Show your wheel to someone at home and tell them the story of creation!"
Time: 8 minutes. Now let's talk about what we learned.
Talk About It (5 min)
Sit in a circle and ask:
1. What did God use to make everything? (His words. He spoke and it happened.)
2. What was your favorite thing God made? Why? (Answers will vary. Accept all.)
3. What did God say about everything He made? (It was good, and at the end very good.)
4. What is special about people? (God made us in His image and gave us a job to care for the world.)
5. How can we say thank you to God for what He made? (Pray, take care of nature, enjoy and share His gifts.)
Say: "Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Now let's say thank you to God."
Closing: Thank You, Creator (5 min)
Say the memory verse together with the motions, twice.
Say: "We're going to pray a thank-you prayer. I'll say a line and you repeat it."
Prayer:
"Dear God, thank You for making the world." (repeat)
"Thank You for light and sky, plants and animals." (repeat)
"Thank You for making me, and for making us very good." (repeat)
"Help us care for what You made." (repeat)
"In Jesus' name, amen." (repeat)
Invite children to add one thing they are thankful God made, if they wish.
Say: "This week, look for something God made and say 'Thank You!' Remember your creation wheel."
Hand out the wheels and send them home with the take-home page.
Materials
- Bible (KJV)
- 6 index cards or paper sheets (one for each day of creation)
- Masking tape
- Paper plates (one per child)
- Crayons or markers
- Child-safe scissors
- Brass fasteners (one per child)
- Scrap paper for arrows
Teacher notes
- Safety: Scissors and brass fasteners are used in the craft. Supervise closely and keep fasteners away from children under 3.
- Adaptation: For children with special needs or a mixed-age group, use picture cards and buddy pairs. Younger children can draw in the wheel while older ones write labels. Offer a quieter role, like holding the cards, for anyone who prefers it.
- Stay with the text: Genesis 1 does not say how long each day was or give details beyond the passage. If children ask about science or timing, say that the Bible tells us who made everything and that it was good.
- Timing: If you run short, make the line-up game shorter. If you have extra time, repeat the memory verse game.
Send it home with parents
Today your child heard Genesis 1 and learned that God created everything by His word, called it good, and made people in His image. They made a Creation Wheel to retell the story.
- What did God make on your favorite day of creation?
- What does it mean that God made you in His image?
- How can our family care for the world God made?
Take a walk outside or look out a window together. Find five things God made and say a short thank-you prayer for each one.
Each day, say Genesis 1:1 and thank God for one thing He made. Do one small act of caring for creation, like watering a plant or picking up litter.
