The full lesson plan
Welcome: Where Do We Begin? (8 min)
Say: "Welcome. Tonight we start at the very beginning of the Bible."
Turn to a neighbor. Share one part of creation you noticed this week and were glad of. Give 2 minutes, then invite 3 or 4 people to share. Write their answers on the board under the heading "Gifts we noticed."
Say: "Notice how many of these gifts we did not make and could not have made."
Say: "Genesis 1 does not argue that God exists; it opens with God already at work."
Explain the plan: we will hear the whole chapter read aloud, look at two big movements in it, talk in small groups, and finish in prayer.
Say: "Now let's listen to the passage together, as if hearing it for the first time."
Hearing the Chapter (10 min)
Assign six readers (or read it yourself). Read Genesis 1:1-31 from the KJV in this order: verses 1-5, 6-8, 9-13, 14-19, 20-23, 24-31.
Say: "As you listen, catch the phrases that keep coming back."
After the reading, ask the group to call out repeated phrases. Write them on the board. Expect:
- "And God said"
- "and it was so"
- "God saw that it was good"
- "the evening and the morning were the ... day"
Say: "The text itself gives us this pattern: God speaks, it happens, God calls it good."
Ask: "What does the repetition tell us about God?" (He is in control, nothing resists his word, and he takes delight in his work.)
Background: In the Old Testament, the Hebrew verb for "created" in verse 1 is used only with God as the one acting.
Say: "Now let's look closer at the first three days."
God Speaks: Light, Sky, Land (10 min)
Say: "Verse 1 says God created the heaven and the earth, and verse 2 shows the earth without form and void, with darkness over the deep."
Walk through days 1-3 on the board:
- Day 1: God speaks and there is light. He divides light from darkness and names them Day and Night.
- Day 2: He makes the firmament and divides the waters. He calls it Heaven.
- Day 3: He gathers the waters, calls the dry land Earth and the waters Seas. Then the earth brings forth grass, herbs and fruit trees.
Say: "God does not struggle. He speaks, and creation answers."
Say: "He also gives order and names things, and what he makes is good."
Gently point to Christ. John 1:1-3 says all things were made by the Word, and 2 Corinthians 4:6 links "Let there be light" with the light of God's glory in Jesus' face.
Pair talk (2 min): "What does it mean for your week that the God who brought order from darkness cares about you?" Invite one or two shares.
Say: "Now let's see how the story builds to its high point."
Filled, Blessed and Very Good (10 min)
Walk through days 4-6:
- Day 4: lights in the firmament, the greater light for day, the lesser for night, and the stars. They are for signs, seasons, days and years.
- Day 5: living creatures in the waters and birds in the sky. God blesses them: "Be fruitful, and multiply."
- Day 6: land animals, then man.
Background: Many teachers notice that days 1-3 prepare places and days 4-6 fill them. That is an observation about the pattern, not a statement in the text.
Read verses 26-28 slowly.
Say: "Only people are described as made in God's image, male and female."
Say: "People are given dominion and God's blessing, so every person has dignity and a calling."
Say: "Dominion means caring for what belongs to God, not using it carelessly."
Read verse 31: God saw everything he had made, "and, behold, it was very good."
Say: "Creation is a gift, and we are part of it and responsible within it."
Write two headings on the board: "Dignity" and "Care." Ask the group for one real-life example of each. (Dignity: treating a difficult coworker with respect. Care: reducing waste or tending a garden.)
Say: "Now let's talk about this in small groups."
Small Group Conversation (14 min)
Form groups of 3 or 4. Give them 9 minutes to discuss, then bring the whole group together for 5 minutes. Questions:
1. Why might God have shown himself as Creator before anything else in the Bible? (It shows he is above all things, and everything else depends on him.)
2. God called creation "good" many times. How does that shape how you see your body, your work, or the natural world? (Matter is not bad; we can receive it with thanks.)
3. What does it mean to be made in God's image, and how does it change how you treat someone you find hard to love? (Every person has worth because of God, not because of what they do.)
4. Where are you tempted to live as though you are in charge of creation instead of caring for it? (Overwork, careless consumption, ignoring others' needs.)
5. How does knowing God simply spoke the world into being comfort you when life feels unformed or dark? (He brings light and order, and he can be trusted with what we cannot fix.)
Say: "Share one insight with the whole group."
Say: "Now let's close by responding to our Creator."
Response, Memory Verse and Prayer (8 min)
Say: "God made everything by his word and called it good, and he made us in his own image."
Say the memory verse together twice from the board: Genesis 1:27 (KJV). Ask each person to write on a note card one way they will honor God as Creator this week.
Prayer points (read slowly, with a pause after each):
- Thank God for creating the world and calling it good.
- Praise him for making every person in his image, and ask for eyes to see that in others.
- Confess where we have misused or ignored what he made.
- Ask for wisdom to care for creation, our bodies and our neighbors.
- Thank him for Jesus, through whom all things were made.
Close: "Lord, you spoke and it was so. Teach us to see your goodness around us and to live as people made in your image. Amen."
Materials
- KJV Bibles (or printed passage)
- Whiteboard or flip chart and markers
- Pens and note cards
- Printed list of the six days (one line each) for reference
- Window view or a plant on the table as a visual reminder
Teacher notes
- Christians hold different views on how to understand the days of Genesis 1. If asked, acknowledge that briefly and return to what the text clearly says: God made everything, it is good, and people bear his image.
- Prepare the six readers before class, and offer the reading to volunteers rather than calling on people, so no one feels put on the spot.
- Adaptation: Provide a printed copy of the passage in larger type for those with low vision. Let quieter participants write answers on note cards instead of speaking, and pair anyone who prefers a partner to a group.
- Keep discussion moving. If time runs short, drop question 4 and keep the prayer time.
