The full lesson plan
Welcome: What Does a Seed Need? (5 min)
Setup: Tape four signs on the walls: Path, Rocky, Thorny, Good. Put the paper seeds in a basket.
Greet each child by name. Hold up one paper seed.
Say: "Today we are talking about seeds. What does a real seed need to grow?" (Soil, water, sunshine, time.)
Let three or four children answer.
Say: "Jesus once told a story about a farmer and his seeds. But the story is really about us and how we listen."
Have the children crouch low like tiny seeds. Count to five slowly, and let them grow tall with arms stretched up.
Say: "Now let's hear the story Jesus told."
Hear the Story (7 min)
Read or retell Matthew 13:1-9 from the Bible. Pause at each ground and do the action with the children.
Say: "Jesus sat by the sea, and a great crowd gathered. He taught them in parables, which are short stories with a meaning."
• A sower went out to sow. Pretend to scatter seed.
• Some seed fell by the way side. The fowls came and ate it. (Flap arms.)
• Some fell on stony places with not much earth. It sprang up fast, but the sun scorched it and it withered because it had no root. (Pop up, then droop.)
• Some fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked it. (Wrap arms around yourself.)
• Some fell on good ground and brought forth fruit: some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. (Reach up high.)
Say: "Jesus ended with these words: 'Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.'"
Background: Farmers in Bible times scattered seed by hand.
Say: "Now let's play the story!"
Game: Seed Journey (8 min)
Setup: Use the four signs on the walls. Clear a safe walking space. Walking only, and no touching.
Time: 8 minutes (about 2 minutes per soil).
Steps:
1. Give each child a paper seed. Say: "You are the seed! Walk to the Path sign."
2. Path: Children stand still with feet together, like hard ground. Call, "Birds!" They flap arms and say, "The seed is gone!"
3. Rocky: Children walk to the Rocky sign, pop up with a cheer, then slowly wilt when you say, "Hot sun!"
4. Thorny: Children walk to the Thorny sign and wrap their arms around themselves. Say: "Worries and wants crowd out the Word."
5. Good: Children walk to the Good sign and slowly grow tall. Each one names one 'fruit', like kindness, sharing or telling the truth. Place all paper seeds in the basket.
Say: "Now let's hear what Jesus said each ground means."
Jesus Explains the Soils (7 min)
Read Matthew 13:18-23, or tell it in your own words. The seed is the word of the kingdom, which is God's message. The soils are hearts that hear it.
• Path: Someone hears but does not understand. The wicked one snatches the word away.
• Rocky: Someone hears and gladly receives it, but has no root. When trouble comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
• Thorny: Someone hears, but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word.
• Good ground: Someone hears, understands and bears fruit.
Say: "Good soil is not perfect. It is a heart that listens, understands and keeps going."
Say: "Jesus is the one teaching us. When we listen to Him, we learn how to follow God."
Ask: "Which soil is easiest to be on a busy day?" Accept honest answers.
Say: "Let's make a reminder to take home."
Craft: Four Soils Fold Card (8 min)
Setup: Fold one sheet of paper into four sections for each child, or let them fold their own.
Time: 8 minutes.
Safety: Crayons and glue sticks only, with no scissors. Use paper 'seeds' and stickers, not real seeds. Check for sticker or glue sensitivities.
Steps:
1. Open the paper and label the four boxes: Path, Rocky, Thorny, Good.
2. Draw each ground. Path: hard ground and a bird. Rocky: rocks and a wilted sprout. Thorny: thorns around a plant.
3. In the Good box, draw a tall plant with lots of fruit. Add stickers if using them.
4. On the back, write or draw: "I will hear God's Word and do it."
5. Fold it closed. Write 'Matthew 13:9' on the front.
Say: "Show someone at home your card and tell them the story."
Talk It Over (5 min)
Sit in a circle. Ask each question and let two or three children answer.
1. What happened to the seed on the path? (Birds ate it. The person did not understand, and the word was snatched away.)
2. Why did the seed on rocky ground wither? (It had no root, so it could not last when the sun was hot.)
3. What are some thorns that can crowd out God's Word today? (Worries, busy schedules, wanting more stuff, screens.)
4. What can we do to be good soil? (Listen, ask questions, read the Bible, obey, pray, and keep going when it is hard.)
Say: "Good soil is a listening heart. You can ask God to give you one."
Memory Verse and Prayer (5 min)
Teach Matthew 13:9 with motions: "Who hath ears to hear" (cup hands behind ears), "let him hear" (point to ears, then nod). Say it together three times, then once whispering and once loudly.
Prayer points: Lead a short prayer, pausing for children to repeat each line.
• "Thank You, God, for Your Word."
• "Help me listen with my ears and my heart."
• "Take away worries that crowd out Your Word."
• "Help me bear good fruit this week."
Say: "Take your fold card home and tell someone the story. Have a great week growing!"
Dismiss children to parents.
Materials
- Bible (KJV)
- Plain paper (1 sheet per child, plus 4 for signs)
- Crayons or markers
- Tape
- Basket or bag
- Scrap paper crumpled into balls (the 'seeds')
- Glue sticks
- Green and yellow stickers for 'fruit'
Teacher notes
- Safety: Craft uses crayons, glue sticks and stickers only. Check for allergies or sensitivities, and supervise glue. No real seeds are used, to avoid allergy and small-parts concerns.
- Adaptation: Use picture cards for the four soils and offer a seated option for the game. Pair younger or shy children with a buddy. Children who prefer quiet can do the motions in place.
- Keep the focus on listening and growing, not guilt. Remind children that God can soften any heart.
- If time runs short, shorten the craft drawings and use stickers for the fruit.
Send it home with parents
Today we studied Jesus' parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-23). Jesus compared hearts to four kinds of ground and showed how God's Word grows in a heart that listens, understands and bears fruit. Children made a four-soils card to retell the story at home.
- Which ground in the story do you think you are most like this week, and why?
- What is one 'thorn' that makes it hard to listen to God?
- What is one way our family can help God's Word grow in our home?
Plant a seed in a cup of soil together. Talk about what it needs to grow and how our hearts need God's Word, then check it each day.
Each day, read one Bible verse together as a family and ask, 'What is one way I can do this today?'
