The full lesson plan
Welcome and Wave Warm-Up (5 min)
Setup: Stand the children in a circle with space to move.
Say: Good morning! Today we remember a day when a crowd welcomed a very special King.
Say: Think of a time you were so happy to see someone that you cheered. Show me with your arms and face!
Let children share one example each with a neighbor (30 seconds). Then teach the word:
Say: The crowd shouted a word, "Hosanna!" Repeat it after me, first whispering, then loud, then super loud!
Say: Hosanna is a Bible word that means "Save now!" People were asking God to save them.
Say: Now let's hear what happened when Jesus came to Jerusalem.
Bible Story: Jesus Rides In (8 min)
Read or tell Matthew 21:1-11 in order. Children copy the actions.
1. Jesus and His disciples near Jerusalem: walk fingers in place.
2. Jesus sends two disciples to the village to find a donkey tied up, with her colt. If anyone asks, they say, "The Lord hath need of them." (Point and nod.)
3. The disciples do as Jesus said and bring the donkey and colt. They put their clothes on them, and Jesus sits on them. (Pretend to lay a coat.)
4. A very great crowd spreads their coats on the road. Others cut branches from trees and spread them. (Wave arms like branches.)
5. The crowds go before Him and follow, crying, "Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!" (Shout and raise hands.)
6. All the city is moved and asks, "Who is this?" The crowd answers, "This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee." (Cup hand to ear.)
Background: Matthew says "branches." John 12:13 tells us they were palm branches. Matthew says this happened to fulfill what the prophet said about a King who comes humble, on a donkey.
Say: Now let's think about what kind of King Jesus is.
Who Is This King? (7 min)
Say: Kings usually ride in on strong horses. Jesus rode in on a donkey. He came humble and gentle.
Say: The crowd shouted "Hosanna," which means "Save now!" That comes from Psalm 118:25-26, where God's people asked the Lord to save them.
Say: They called Jesus the Son of David and said, "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord." They welcomed Him as the King God promised.
Say: Jesus really is the King who saves. Later this week, the Bible tells us He gave His life on the cross for us and rose again.
Quick check (hands up for "yes," arms crossed for "no"):
- Did Jesus plan this day? (Yes. He told the disciples exactly what to find.)
- Did the crowd honor Him? (Yes.)
- Does Jesus still deserve our praise today? (Yes.)
Say: We can welcome Jesus too, with our words, our songs, and the way we live.
Say: Let's make our own branches to wave!
Craft: Hosanna Palm Branch (8 min)
Setup: Pre-cut a palm shape (long leaf) for each child, or have scissors ready for older children. Place tape and sticks on the tables.
Safety: Scissors are used under supervision. Check for allergies and sensitivities to craft materials. Sticks are for waving only, not for pointing or hitting.
Steps:
1. Take a green leaf shape. Fold it in half lengthwise.
2. Snip slits from the edge toward the fold to make leaf fringe (stop before the fold). Unfold it.
3. Write "Hosanna!" down the middle with crayon.
4. Tape the base of the leaf to a stick or rolled tube.
5. On the back, write "Matthew 21:9."
While children work, repeat the memory verse in short pieces ("Hosanna to the son of David...") and let them echo.
Say: Great job! Hold your branches high and get ready to line up.
Palm-Branch Parade (8 min)
Setup before class: Make a parade path with tape on the floor. Lay jackets or cloths along it. Put a sign at the end reading "Jesus Our King." Clear the path of hazards.
Safety: Walk only, no running. Keep the path wide and hands to yourself.
Steps:
1. Line up behind the leader at the start. Everyone holds their branch.
2. March slowly while waving branches. Walk gently over the cloths and say: "Hosanna!"
3. Stop at halfway. Teacher calls, "Who is this?" Children answer, "This is Jesus, our King!"
4. Say the memory verse in three parts as you walk: (a) "Hosanna to the son of David," (b) "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord," (c) "Hosanna in the highest!"
5. At the sign, wave branches together and cheer, then sit down quietly.
Say: That was a joyful welcome for Jesus!
Say: Let's talk about it.
Talk It Over (5 min)
Ask the children these questions, one at a time:
1. Why did Jesus ride a donkey instead of a war horse? (He came as a gentle, humble King.)
2. What did the people do to honor Jesus? (They spread their coats and branches and shouted Hosanna.)
3. What does "Hosanna" mean? ("Save now!")
4. How can we welcome Jesus this week? (Praise Him, pray, be kind, obey Him.)
Say: The crowd welcomed Jesus with joy. We can too.
Prayer and Goodbye (4 min)
Say: Let's thank Jesus for being our King. Repeat each line after me:
- "Jesus, You are our King."
- "Thank You for coming to save us."
- "Help us to love You and welcome You every day."
- "Hosanna in the highest! Amen."
Point out parent take-home sheets and the branches to take home.
Say: This week, wave your branch and tell someone why Jesus is our King. See you next time!
Materials
- Bible (KJV)
- Green paper (one sheet per child)
- Safety scissors (or pre-cut palm shapes)
- Crayons or markers
- Tape
- Craft sticks or rolled paper tubes (one per child)
- Jackets or large cloths for the parade path
- Joyful music and a player
Teacher notes
- Safety: Scissors and craft sticks need supervision. Pre-cut shapes for younger children, check for craft allergies, and keep the parade path clear and walking only.
- Adaptation: Use pictures of each story step for visual learners. Offer a quieter job (carrying the sign or laying cloths) and buddy pairs for children who need support. For mixed ages, pair older children with younger ones.
- Memory verse is long. Teach it in three parts with motions rather than all at once.
- Clearly separate Matthew's text ("branches") from John's detail ("palm") when you teach.
Send it home with parents
Today we learned how Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while the crowd welcomed Him with branches and shouts of "Hosanna!" (Matthew 21:1-11). "Hosanna" means "Save now!" Jesus is the humble King who comes to save us.
- Why do you think Jesus chose to ride a donkey?
- How can our family welcome Jesus this week?
Hold a mini family parade at home. Wave your palm branch, say Matthew 21:9 together, and thank Jesus for being our King.
Each day this week, say "Hosanna!" in prayer and thank Jesus for one way He has helped you.
