The full lesson plan
Welcome and Hungry Tummies (4 min)
Setup: Hide the paper loaves and fish in the basket.
Greet each child by name. Have everyone sit on the floor.
Say: "Good morning! Today we will hear about a very hungry crowd."
Say: "Rub your tummy and say, 'I'm hungry!'" Do it three times, getting louder, then whisper it.
Say: "Who helps us when we are hungry?" Let children answer.
Say: "Jesus helped a hungry crowd, and today we will find out how. Now let's listen to the story."
Bible Story with Motions (5 min)
Open the Bible to John 6. Tell the story in order, doing each motion with the children.
Say: "A great crowd followed Jesus." (Walk fingers in the air.)
Say: "Jesus went up on a mountain and sat down with his disciples." (Sit on the floor.)
Say: "Jesus saw the crowd and asked Philip where they could buy bread for them to eat." (Hand on tummy.)
Say: "Andrew said, 'There is a boy here with five barley loaves and two small fishes. But what are they among so many people?'" (Hold up 5 fingers, then 2.)
Say: "Jesus said, 'Make the people sit down.' There was much grass. About five thousand men sat down." (Pat the floor.)
Say: "Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. He shared the bread and the fish, and everyone had as much as they wanted." (Fold hands, then pass out pretend food.)
Say: "They were full! Jesus said to gather the leftovers. Twelve baskets were filled." (Make a big circle with your arms.)
Little Becomes Plenty (4 min)
Take the paper loaves and fish out of the basket one at a time. Count five loaves and two fish together.
Say: "This is not much food for so many people."
Say: "But Jesus gave thanks, and there was enough for everyone."
Say: "Jesus is kind. He sees people who need help and takes care of them."
Background: Barley bread was simple, everyday food.
Teach the verse, line by line, with motions. Children repeat each line.
- "There is a lad here" (point)
- "which hath five barley loaves" (5 fingers)
- "and two small fishes" (2 fingers)
- "but what are they among so many?" (shrug, arms wide)
Say the whole verse together twice. Say: "Now let's play a game and feed the crowd!"
Feed the Crowd Game (5 min)
Setup: Put one paper loaf or fish for each child, plus extras, in the basket. Clear a calm space. Children stay seated, and no one runs.
Time: 5 minutes.
1. Say: "Sit on the grass, everyone!" Children sit in a circle.
2. Hold up the basket. Say: "Jesus gave thanks." Children say, "Thank you, God!"
3. Walk around the circle and give each child one paper piece.
4. When everyone has one, children rub their tummies and say, "Everyone is full!"
5. Say: "Gather up the leftovers!" Children put their pieces in the basket. Count slowly to twelve together as the last pieces go in.
Play again, letting a child hold the basket if time allows.
Basket of Bread and Fish Craft (6 min)
Setup: Before class, cut out 5 brown circles and 2 gray fish for each child. Teacher only uses scissors.
Safety: Small pieces. Not for children under 3. Supervise glue sticks, and keep paper pieces out of mouths.
Time: 6 minutes.
1. Give each child a paper plate. Say: "This is your basket."
2. Children color the edge of the plate with crayons.
3. Help children glue on five brown loaves.
4. Help them glue on two gray fish.
5. Count the loaves and fish together. Say the memory verse once with motions.
Write each child's name on the back of the plate.
Talk About It (3 min)
Sit together with the crafts. Ask each question and let several children answer.
1. What food did the boy have? (Five loaves and two fish.)
2. What did Jesus do before he shared the food? (He gave thanks.)
3. Did everyone get enough to eat? (Yes! They were all full.)
4. How did Jesus show he cares? (He gave them food.)
Say: "Jesus takes care of people, and he takes care of you."
Thank You Prayer and Goodbye (3 min)
Say: "Now let's thank God together." Fold hands and pray one short line at a time. Children repeat after you.
- "Thank you, God, for food."
- "Thank you, Jesus, for taking care of us."
- "Help us to say thank you."
- "Amen."
Say the memory verse one last time with motions.
Say: "Remember, Jesus fed a hungry crowd!"
Hand out the crafts. Send each child home with a smile.

- Crayons
- Glue sticks
Teacher notes
- Safety: no real food is used. Supervise glue sticks and small paper pieces, and keep them away from children under 3.
- Adaptation: for children who need a quieter option or a visual aid, let them hold the basket and the paper loaves and fish while you tell the story. Pair younger or shyer children with a buddy.
- Do not add details the text does not give, such as the boy's name or what anyone said or felt. Use the words "boy" and "lad" as the passage does.
- If children lose focus, repeat the verse motions. Keep transitions short.
Send it home with parents
Today we heard how Jesus fed a hungry crowd of about five thousand men with five barley loaves and two small fishes. Jesus gave thanks, and everyone had enough. Your child learned that Jesus cares for people and that we can thank God for our food.
- What food did the boy have, and what did Jesus do with it?
- What can we thank God for today?
At a meal this week, hold up five fingers and then two fingers. Retell the story together, then thank God for your food before you eat.
Say a thank-you prayer before every meal this week. Practice John 6:9 with the motions.
